Golden Rock – Kyaikthiyo

Kyaikthiyo means "the pagoda carried on the head of the hermit." It is more commonly known as the Golden Rock.

This famous pagoda is located northeast of Yangon, about 166 km from the city. The journey starts at a base camp called Kim Pun. From there, it's another 12 km uphill to reach the Golden Rock, which sits on the highest peak of the Paung Laung mountain range, about 1,102 meters above sea level.

Kyaikthiyo is probably the second most famous and respected pagoda in Myanmar.

Legend and History

According to legend, about eight years after Buddha attained enlightenment (around 574 BC), a celestial king chose a large boulder from the deep sea. This boulder was said to look like the head of a hermit who was meditating in the nearby mountains. The king placed it on the cliff at Kyaikthiyo.

On top of this boulder, the hermit enshrined three sacred hairs of the Buddha. Later, a small stupa was built on the rock.

The Amazing Sight

The Golden Rock is truly incredible because of its position. It appears to hang on the edge of a cliff, defying gravity. This makes it one of the most remarkable sights in Myanmar.

Many people come here on pilgrimage, not only for religious reasons but also for the experience of climbing through lush forests, hills, and streams. The fresh air and natural beauty make the journey unforgettable.

Today, there is a motor road that takes visitors part of the way up. From there, it takes about an hour to walk to the summit. The whole area has a magical feel and is known for its untouched natural environment.
